Greece weather overview

In summertime Greece swelters under cloudless skies, clocking up as many as 12 hours of sunshine a day and, although sea breezes take the edge off the heat in the islands and on the coast, a large conurbation like Athens can be impossibly hot and oppressive.

Those who find extreme heat uncomfortable should visit in the autumn months of September and October when the weather is sunny, resorts relatively uncrowded and the sea deliciously warm. Spring is also pleasant although only the hardy will venture to swim.

Winter brings some rain and even snow, although this rarely sticks around for long except in the mountains where conditions can be severely cold. Northern Greece is slightly colder and wetter than the south and, if travelling here, you should brace yourself for sudden thunderstorms even in the height of summer.

What to pack for Greece weather

Light clothing for the summer should be supplemented by a warm cover-up for the occasional chilly evening or blustery day (the northerly Etesian wind, which plays round the islands, can reach gale force at times!) Take warmer clothes on a winter visit, especially if you are going to Northern Greece or into the mountains.
