What is the weather in Switzerland in September like?

September marks the transition from summer to autumn in Switzerland, although at the beginning of the month, the weather can still feel quite summery.

As cooler air becomes more dominant, it generally brings more stable weather with fewer afternoon thunderstorms, especially in the Alps.

Cooling on the Central Plateau

On the Central Plateau, maximum daytime temperatures are a good 4°C lower than in August, though, of course, this is a gradual process, with each day becoming slightly cooler as the month progresses.

Daytime temperatures in the west may reach 20°C, but in the east, such as in Zurich, it is a degree cooler. As the month progresses, morning fogs become more common.

However, there is still sunshine to be enjoyed with around six hours a day on average across the plateau, with slightly more in the west than in the east.

Crisp & clear in the Jura Mountains

In the Jura Mountains, cooler conditions mean temperatures reach only the mid-teens during the day, dropping into single figures at night. Once again, there is about an hour less sunshine here than on the Plateau, and a little more rain. However, on clear days, the air is crisp with excellent visibility.

Clearest time of year in the Alps

In the Swiss Alps, September is also a great month for clear days, usually the clearest of the year. There is generally less moisture in the air, so summer haze is not such a feature.

At high elevations, it is easily possible to see over 100 kilometres, so this is a great time of year for hiking, and it is generally less crowded than in August.

In Alpine resorts such as St Moritz and Zermatt, expect temperatures to reach the mid-teens during the day, falling to near zero at night. During the month, there is an average of more than five hours of sunshine per day, so conditions are still pleasant.

Last summer sun in the south

Down on the lakes in the far south summer lingers a little longer in September than elsewhere in the country, especially in the first two weeks, but even here cooler weather gradually sets in.

The average daytime maximum temperature for the month in Locarno and Lugano is around 22°C, which is 5°C cooler than August. September is still a wet month, with rainfall often coming in heavy but mostly short-lived showers, although longer periods of rain are also possible.

Despite this, the region still enjoys around six-and-a-half hours of sunshine per day on average, allowing plenty of time for outdoor activities.
