What is the weather in Switzerland in March like?

Although officially the start of spring, March is still relatively cold throughout the country. This is partly because almost everywhere in Switzerland is at least 500 metres (1,800ft) above sea level, which is far higher than any town or village in the UK.

Changeable weather on the Central Plateau

In cities on the Central Plateau, temperatures still fall to around zero at night and don't rise much above 10°C at best during the day. So, compared with February, the difference is noticeable but not dramatic.

The weather can still be quite changeable: overcast skies, light rain and occasional late snowfall are all possible. Fog can still be a feature, particularly early in the month, although as temperatures slowly rise, it becomes less frequent. Sunshine is, however, on the rise, with most places experiencing at least four hours a day and, around Lake Geneva, even more than five hours.

Colder in the Jura Mountains

Towns and cities in the Jura Mountains are another 500 metres above sea level, so it is even colder here.

Temperatures usually rise to single figures during the day, falling to a few degrees below zero at night, while weather systems from the north and west can still bring snowfall at any time throughout the month. As with the plateau, there are just over four hours of sunshine a day on average.

In the Swiss Alps, daytime temperatures vary depending on altitude. At high altitudes where there is generally plenty of snow, such as at St Moritz (1,700 metres above sea level), rather surprisingly daytime temperatures rise to as high as 5°C most days in March.

This is on the valley floor and does lead to some melting of the snow, but temperatures always drop back to below zero after nightfall. And of course, up on the slopes, it is not as warm during the day because of the higher elevations. Meanwhile, in the lower valleys, as expected, it is warmer, and there is less snow.

At the lowest levels, such as at Sion and Chur, which are more than 1,000 metres below St Moritz, temperatures normally reach 12°C to 14°C during the day. Down here, winter snows are usually gone by the beginning of March.

However, at night it will only be a degree or two above zero, so it is still cold. St Moritz and Chur have similar levels of sunshine in March at just under five hours a day on average, while in Sion it is normally just over six hours.

Warmer in Locarno & Lugano

In the far south at Locarno and Lugano, which are only 200-to-300 metres above sea level, it is warmer still with temperatures rising to 14°C during the day and not falling below 5°C at night.

The mountain peaks may still be snow-covered, but at lake level, it is more springlike. There is more rainfall down here than up in the Alps, where it obviously generally falls as snow, but you can also expect an average of over six hours of sunshine per day. So, probably this is the sunniest region in Switzerland in March.
