What is the weather in Switzerland in April like?

The main difference in Switzerland's weather in April compared to the preceding winter months is the transition from cold, snowy conditions to milder, more variable spring weather.

Central Plateau: Bern, Geneva & Zurich

While in winter the weather on the Central Plateau is mostly settled, delivering low cloud and fog, April brings more changeable conditions with occasional sunshine, rain showers and fluctuating temperatures.

Daytime maximum temperatures are up in the mid-teens, falling to between 4°C to 7°C at night with around six hours of sunshine on average each day. However, it is possible to get sunshine, rain, and even occasionally snow all on the same day.

In the Jura Mountains, average maximum daytime temperatures are around 5°C cooler than on the plateau and at night it usually drops to near freezing, so it is a bit cooler here because of the higher elevations and with about an hour less sunshine per day on average.

Still plenty of snow in the Swiss Alps

In the Swiss Alps, the weather at high elevations at the beginning of the month is still wintery, with plenty of snow usually still on the mountain slopes. However, even at destinations such as St Moritz and Zermatt, average daytime temperatures on the valley floor do reach into high single figures, albeit falling to below zero at night.

The radiant warmth of the sun on clear days also contributes to snow melt, but most high-altitude ski resorts still remain open until at least the middle of the month.

Lower down in the deep valleys, such as at Sion, snow has usually disappeared completely from the valley floor by the beginning of April. It is relatively warm in Sion in April, with daytime highs averaging just under 18°C and quite sunny, with seven hours of sunshine a day. This compares with around five hours of sunshine per day in St Moritz and Zermatt.

Föhn winds can affect the Alpine valleys

Alpine valleys can also be affected by warm winds blowing down from the surrounding mountains. These are called föhn winds, and they occur when dry air is forced over the mountain ridges separating Switzerland from Italy, which then descends into the valleys.

Air warms as it sinks because it is compressed by the weight of air above it, and dry air warms by about 1°C per 100 metres of descent.

So, temperatures in the valleys can rise rapidly when a föhn wind starts blowing. A rise of 10°C in a matter of minutes is not uncommon. The two valleys that are particularly affected by föhn winds are the Rhine Valley at Chur and the Reuss Valley at Altdorf.

Spring on the southern slopes of the Alps

On the southern slopes of the Alps on the Italian border, spring is already well established at the beginning of April compared with elsewhere in Switzerland. Cherry blossom is typically already in bloom or just past its peak.

By the middle of the month, some migratory birds have already returned, and tulips are in full bloom. The main influence on the weather is what is happening in the Mediterranean to the south.

Daytime temperatures can hit 20°C on some days, though nights are still cool at less than 10°C. Expect at least six hours of sunshine on average per day, but rain showers are also more likely here than in other parts of the country.
