What is the weather in Switzerland in August like?
Summer continues across Switzerland in August, with mostly warm, sunny days. A noticeable feature is the increased chance of afternoon thunderstorms, especially in the Alps.
That said, there are still, on average, at least six hours a day with bright sunshine almost everywhere in the country. And this despite the fact that as the month progresses the number of daylight hours decreases.
Warm & sunny on the Central Plateau
Across the Central Plateau, temperatures are much the same as they are in July, ranging from the mid-teens at night to the mid-twenties during the day.
Once again, cities in the west such as Geneva and Lausanne are a degree or two warmer and sunnier than Bern and Zurich, but overall the weather across the plateau is very pleasant with at least seven hours of sunshine per day on average.
Cloudier in the Jura Mountains
In the Jura Mountains, it is cloudier, with slightly more rain than on the plateau, because of its exposure to weather coming in off the Atlantic; it is also cooler by a few degrees. Expect around six-and-a-half hours of sunshine per day on average, with daytime highs around or just under 20°C; this is the same as in July.
Wetter in the Swiss Alps
In the Swiss Alps, August is the peak of the thunderstorm season, driven by daytime heating that causes warm, moist air to rise. However, the resulting rain is almost always short-lived and only occurs on about a third of days in the month in the late afternoon or early evening.
At the higher resorts, daytime maximum temperatures are a shade cooler than in July at just under 20°C, and there is less sunshine per day on average compared with July, at a little under six hours. Expect clear mornings in the mountains, with cloud building during the day that may or may not later lead to a brief spell of rain.
More unstable conditions in the far south
In the far south of Switzerland it is warmer and more humid than elsewhere in the country in August, with more extensive thunderstorms than in the Alps. As in the Alps, these only occur on about a third of days in the month, but they bring heavier rainfall.
However, as before in July, there is still plenty of sunshine. Expect around eight hours per day on average, with temperatures reaching the high twenties during the day, falling by about 10°C at night.
