Best time to visit Switzerland
Come snow or shine, Switzerland is just beautiful. Whether you're planning to dive deep into one of its cultured cities on the banks of a mighty river or lake, wing high into the Swiss Alps in search of adventure thrills and virgin powder snow, or kick back riding viaduct-leaping, glacier-grazing railways that are among the most scenic on the planet, you'll find it in here.
If you're flexible with dates and can avoid peak times like school holidays, the best time to visit Switzerland is late spring, when the snow is melting and flowers are in bloom but the crowds are yet to arrive, or in early autumn, when there's a chance of some rain and temperatures drop but you'll find plenty of options when it comes to accommodation and things to do.

One look at Switzerland and you'll be itching to get outdoors. Mother Nature did herself proud here, with thundering rivers, piercing blue lakes and an endless parade of mythical peaks. Don't be fooled by the country's dinky scale on the map; the outdoor possibilities are boundless.

Skiing & snow activities
- from December until Easter
With kids whizzing down the slopes as soon as they can walk, the Swiss are practically born on skis. Nearly every inch of the Alps has fine pistes to pound.
The first flakes start to fall in late autumn. By December, there's a thick blanket of snow in resorts hovering around the 2,000-metre mark and the ski season launches, with lifts floating up to slopes that buzz with skiers and boarders until Easter. If you're looking for deals, dodge the school holidays and book your ski passes in advance online.
For scenic drama, Zermatt wins with 360 km of sky-high pistes offering front-row views of the 4478m fang of Matterhorn and cross-border skiing into Italy.
Grindelwald in the Bernese Alps delivers phenomenal views of the glaciated peaks of Eiger (Ogre), Mönch (Monk) and Jungfrau (Virgin), skiing on 200 km of well-prepared slopes.
There's also a flurry of winter activities for non-skiers, from snowshoeing to winter walking, downhill rides on a vintage Velogemel (a wooden ski-bike hybrid) and sledding on the 15-km Big Pintenfritz, Europe's longest toboggan run.
For a low-key, family-friendly vibe and fewer queues, glide over to Arosa-Lenzerheide in Graubünden, or car-free, chocolate-box pretty Bettmeralp in Valais, with out-of-this-world views of the great icy sweep of the Aletsch Glacier.
If you're a boarder, you'll find freestyle thrills and excellent snowparks in Laax, Davos and Saas-Fee.
The steep backcountry around Verbier and Andermatt is ideal for ski touring and off-piste skiing in deep and pristine powder, while Glacier 3000 near the ritzy resort of Gstaad has one of the longest seasons, with snow-sure slopes from November to early May.
Walking & hiking
- from mid-June until September
With the Alps ripping across more than 60% of Switzerland, muddy boots are a rite of passage, and the call of the mountains is irresistible in summer. High-level hiking begins when the snow has fully melted, running roughly from mid-June to September (the higher you go, the shorter the season).
If you're up for a challenge, there are some tremendous hut-to-hut hikes taking you through wildflower-freckled pastures, past jewel-coloured lakes and glacier-crowned peaks, most notably the week-long Bärentrek (Bear Trek) on the Via Alpina from Meiringen to Lenk, which dips into the heart of the Jungfrau Region.
Even if you only have a day spare, you'll find off-the-charts beauty by donning a backpack and hitting the trail. Right up there is the 22-km Lakes of Macun trek.
Starting in the quaintly frescoed village of Zernez in the remote Swiss National Park, the hike twists you to a high plateau beaded with 23 lakes glittering every shade of blue. Just as lovely is the 6.5 km Matterhorn Glacier Trail in Zermatt, with close-ups of Switzerland's iconic mountain.
More, you say? Strike out on the upliftingly pretty 15 km Faulhornweg from Schynige Platte to First in the Jungfrau Region, or the 12 km Aletsch Glacier Trail shadowing the longest glacier in the Alps (passing shaggy-haired Valaisian blacknose sheep en route).
The hiking season lengthens at lower elevations. In autumn, it's a joy to walk in the golden vineyards of Lavaux and the Rhône Valley, the larch forests of Graubünden's Engadine Valley and the flame-coloured beech and maple forests of the Jura Mountains hugging the French border.
Cycling & e-biking
- from March until November
Whether it's an easy pedal along a lakeshore, a thigh-burning road climb over an Alpine pass or a bone-rattling downhill ride, Switzerland is a brilliant country to get on your bike from spring to autumn. And if you would prefer to admire the Alps without the uphill slog, you can always opt for an e-bike. Many SBB railway stations rent out reliable wheels.
For mountain bikers, Davos in Graubünden is the dream, with a whopping 700 km of downhill, enduro and cross-country, including Switzerland's longest single track, the 40 km Alps Epic Trail.
Or make for the downhill favourite, Zermatt, where flow trails wow with staggering views of the Matterhorn. Verbier, Crans-Montana and Lenzerheide notch up thrills with exhilarating trails and terrain parks.
To see the scenery unfold in slow motion, ride along the banks of the Rhine or Rhône, or along the shores of lakes Biel, Neuchâtel and Murten in the Three-Lakes Region, pausing in vineyards with views of the Jura Mountains.
E-biking is at its finest on the one- to two-day Emmental Cheese Route, looping through cow-nibbled pastures, rustic farming villages and dairies where you can stop to taste Switzerland's famous holey cheese; and pack some for a picnic.
Water-based activities
- from April until September
As days get longer and warmer, April to September is a terrific time to plunge into Switzerland's glassy lakes and fast-flowing rivers. Dubbed the Swiss Grand Canyon, the spectacular Rhine Gorge in Graubünden is rarely crowded even in the height of summer.
Here, whitewater rafters take to the foaming waters and rapids of the Vorderrhein, paddling past dramatic limestone pinnacles and turrets. Rafting and hydrospeeding also ramp up the action on the fast-flowing rivers Rhine, Rhöne, Inn and Saane in summer.
For a gentler vibe, head to the lakes. You're miles from the sea, but you won't miss it for a second, with Lake Geneva, Lake Lucerne, Lake Zurich and Lake Neuchätel all offering arresting views, beaches, lidos and watersports like SUP, wakeboarding, sailing and windsurfing.
Buffeted by Alpine winds, mountain-clasped Lake Silvaplana near St Moritz draws kitesurfers and windsurfers. If you would prefer to paddle from castle to vine in quiet exhilaration, with ravishing views of the Bernese Alps on the horizon, hook onto Lake Thun's Canoe Trail.
Wild swimming? Ticino's wild Valle Verzasca and Maggia Valley beckon with turquoise rivers and crystal-clear pools for a refreshing dip.
City breaks
- year-round with spring the best
With fewer crowds, parks and gardens in bloom, the last snow still dusting mountain peaks and good deals on flights and hotels, spring is a wonderful season to visit Switzerland's cities. Just be sure to pack a brolly for the odd downpour.
You could begin in the oft-overlooked capital, Bern. It's a knockout, with miles of medieval arcades to wander, Renaissance fountains (including one of a child-eating ogre, the Kindlifresserbrunnen), resident bears in the BearPark, and Renzo Piano's wave-shaped Zentrum Paul Klee unveiling the colour-charged works of the famous Swiss expressionist.
Swiss cities step effortlessly from the urban to the outdoors, and you really feel it in summer, when cool badi (lidos) spring up along the Limmat River and lake in Zurich, with swimming pools, yoga classes, cocktails and DJ beats.
In Bern, you can join locals to float down the turquoise Aare River. Geneva gets in on the act, too, mixing up culture in museums and fine dining in its French-flavoured bistros with lakefront picnics, swims and watersports with Mont Blanc views.
Autumn can be wetter, but it's a fine season for gallery days. For cutting-edge art galleries and Pritzker Prize-winning architecture, head north to Basel on the Rhine. Edging south to Ticino, you can still get lucky with mild weather on the pretty piazzas and palm-flanked promenades of Lugano.
By late November, the first Christmas markets bring festive cheer to cities all over Switzerland.
Festivals & events
- things to do year-round
From folk festivals to make you yodel out loud to winter ski races, there's never a dull moment on Switzerland's events calendar.
Spring bursts into flower in late March at the Morges Tulip Festival on the shores of Lake Geneva, with 140,000 tulips in bloom.
Nudging higher into the Alps, skiers battle it out for the crown at the 42 km cross-country Engadine Ski Marathon. Lucerne's Easter Festival brings top-draw classical music to the stage, while Zurich bids a fiery, pagan-style farewell to winter at Sechseläuten, with costumed parades and the burning of the firework-filled Böögg snowman.
June goes open air at the St Gallen Festival, with operatic high notes in the UNESCO-listed Abbey District, while Zurich flies the rainbow flag at Pride, with LGBTQ+ parades, parties and concerts.
In July, the spotlight flicks to the two-week Montreux Jazz Festival, where you can catch outdoor concerts while admiring dreamy views of the lake.
If folk fun is more your bag, head to Davos to see burly men do battle in Swiss Alpine wrestling at Sertig Schwinget. August turns up the heat at Zurich's Street Parade with techno and love mobile floats storming the city.
That same month, the Verbier Festival brings classical music to the mountains and the Fêtes de Genève fireworks, gigs and street food to lake shores.
In the mellow autumn months of October and November, Basel Autumn Fair is a feast of food stands and fairground rides. Lugano Autumn Festival entices with Ticino wines, regional food and folk music, while Bern gets creative with elaborate braids of onions at the Zibelemärit (Onion Market) in its medieval old town.
December brings Christmas market sparkle. In the historic streets of Basel and Bern, light-strung chalets sell hand-crafted gifts, gingerbread, mulled wine and the cheesy delights of fondue and raclette.
Zurich's showstopper is a singing Christmas tree complete with carol-singing choir. Reached via the world's steepest cogwheel railway, 2,132 metres Mt Pilatus above Lake Lucerne twinkles with Europe's highest Christmas market.
In January, St Moritz gives visitors a frosty welcome at its Snow Polo World Cup, while Grindelwald breaks the ice at the World Snow Festival, with extraordinarily intricate snow sculptures.
This is also prime time for ski races, including the longest downhill run of the lot: the Lauberhorn in Wengen. February fizzes with pre-Lenten carnival shenanigans, with wild costumed parades in cities like Basel and Lucerne.
Adventure sports
- from March until November
Spring through autumn, Switzerland gets pulses racing with extreme sports. Right at the Alpine heart in the insanely pretty Jungfrau Region is Interlaken, one of Europe's foremost adventure hubs.
Come summer, there's every heart-pumping pursuit you can imagine in the surrounding peaks: bungee jumping, glacier canyon swinging, paragliding, skydiving with Eiger on the horizon, whitewater rafting, hydrospeeding; you name it.
Down south in Ticino, daredevils jump 007-style off the 220 metre-high Verzasca Dam, which starred in the James Bond film GoldenEye. You can take the leap from Easter until October.
Year-round, there is phenomenal paragliding in the Alps. Head to Fiescheralp in Valais to soar above the UNESCO World Heritage Aletsch Glacier, or to Zermatt to catch thermals in the face of the mighty Matterhorn.
From December to mid-March, St Moritz gives you the chance to slip into the role of a pro bobsledder on its Olympia Bob Run, picking up hair-raising speeds of 135 km/h.
Best season to visit Switzerland
Every season has its own appeal in Switzerland, from the calmer, cooler days of spring and autumn to summer's open-air festivals and hut-to-hut hikes and winter's snow sports and Christmas markets.
- Spring: March, April & May
- Summer: June, July & August
- Autumn: September, October & November
- Winter: December, January & February
Spring in Switzerland
Spring in Switzerland is a tale of two countries. Up in Alpine resorts, skiers, boarders and sledgers play in the powder right into early April. At lower elevations, blossoming trees and flowers add pops of brilliant colour to valleys and lake shores. It's a terrific time for walking and cycling at low altitudes and enjoying the country at its peaceful best.
As May arrives, mountain lifts stop, with many resorts closing until the summer. The lakes are particularly lovely in spring, whether you head to Geneva for a mix of culture, fine dining and mouette (boat) rides with Mont Blanc views.
Dip further south into Italian-speaking Ticino for romps around UNESCO-listed medieval castles in Bellinzona, piazza life in Lugano and Locarno, and blooming botanical gardens on the Brissago Islands.
As the snow melts, visit the Lauterbrunnen Valley in the Jungfrau Region to see 72 waterfalls crash over sheer cliff faces.
Summer in Switzerland
June sidesteps the biggest summer crowds. The weather is warming up nicely, wildflowers freckle the slopes, and cowbells chime in the mountains.
From mid-month, Alpine trails and huts open. Fast forward to July and August, and the action is turned up full volume, with bikers and hikers storming the peaks and thrillseekers descending on towns like Interlaken for extreme sports. It's also a wonderful month to hit the lakes, with watersports from SUP to kayaking.
Events-wise, the focus is firmly on the outdoors, with cities and towns hosting markets, music festivals, parties, parades and folk fairs. In Switzerland's south, on Ticino's palm-fringed lakes Maggiore and Lugano, the vibe is almost Mediterranean, with café terraces buzzing with locals sipping aperitivi and eating gelato.
On Swiss National Day on 1 August, the country celebrates with fireworks, parades, alphorn performances, parties and bonfires lit atop mountain peaks.
Autumn in Switzerland
There's a lot to love about autumn in Switzerland. This is the quiet season, with few crowds, cheaper flights and the lowest room rates. Come prepared for fickle weather, packing layers and waterproofs, and you're good to go.
Time it right, and September and October can be golden months, with crisp blue skies and still-mild days for exploring. It's a glorious time for vineyard strolls and wine tastings in the Lavaux above Lake Geneva and the Rhöne Valley.
Ticino charms with wineries serving full-bodied Merlots, colour-changing foliage and seasonal specialities made with chestnuts, game, mushrooms and pumpkins in rustic stone taverns called grotti.
See the larch forests aflame and the rutting of stags in the Swiss National Park. Or for relaxed leaf-peeping from the comfort of one of Switzerland's most scenic trains, board the World Heritage Rhätische Bahn in Graubünden or the GoldenPass Express from Interlaken to Montreux.
Up in the Alps, the cows descend from their summer pastures before winter snows sweep in, with floral garlands, clanging bells and folk parades.
Winter in Switzerland
As snow polishes the Alps, December is an enchanting time to visit Swiss towns and cities for Christmas markets, ice-skating, nativity scenes and carousels.
Otherwise, winter means mountains. Now's the season for skiing, snowboarding, winter walking, sledding and snow fun in the Alps, with much of the action revolving around big-name resorts like Zermatt, Verbier, Davos, Gstaad and St Moritz, and the boarder faves of Laax and Saas-Fee. Avoid the school holidays to stand the best chances of snapping up better deals.
In February, Guggenmusik brass bands and costumed characters storm the streets of towns and cities as carnival, or Fasnacht, takes hold. There are riotous parades in Basel, while deep in the remote Lötschental valley in Valais, beastly, shaggy-pelted Tschäggätta drive away the winter gloom with cowbells and sticks.
