How to indulge in a tranquil weekend of wellness in Liverpool

When most people think of Liverpool, it's usually either about music or football. Both of these are essential to the identity of the city; however, they're not all that make Liverpool what it is.

The traditional perception is that Liverpool is a party hub, filled with hens and stags. That's true, but it's also home to incredible scenery, outdoor adventure, and locals who love to chill out. With miles of sandy beaches, a laid-back attitude and dozens of coastal cycle and walking paths, Liverpool is well positioned for your next wellness retreat in the UK.

Having been named the 'best large city break' destination by Which?, a weekend escape to Merseyside is a popular option for many. So, as someone who lives in Liverpool, let me share the best places for indulging in a weekend of wellness in the city.

How to do it: browse great value accommodation with ALL - Accor Live Limitless*, which hosts numerous well-known hotels around the city of Liverpool.

Choose your spa experience

One of the quickest and easiest ways to feel primped, pampered, and serene is by having an excellent massage. There's no shortage of spas in the city, but one of the most distinctive lies in an unexpected place.

On the top floor of the country's largest LUSH store, you can find a tranquil spa with aromatherapy, massages, colour- and music-inspired treatments and more.

Of course, the whole experience is complemented by LUSH products that you can buy on your way out. After your massage, enjoy a few more moments of calm with a loose-leaf tea in the salon area.

For mind and body relaxation, head to the Jayde Spa. Soaring high above Liverpool, this new spa also offers yoga and Pilates classes with incredible views across the city. While this is primarily for residents of the Legacie building, non-residents can book a class and add two hours of spa access to its rooftop Jacuzzi pool, sauna, steam room and cold plunge.

Getting there: Liverpool is super accessible with direct trains* from London, Birmingham, Newcastle, Glasgow, Llandudno, and more locations across the UK. Meanwhile, Liverpool John Lennon Airport, with its newly refurbished luxury Aspire lounge, sets the tone for a relaxing wellness weekend in the city.

Try mindful coastal activities

Wellness isn't just about heading to the spa; it's about the body as much as the mind. With the River Mersey flowing through Liverpool as the lifeblood of the city, coastal outdoor activities are available by the boatload.

The first place to visit is Liverpool Watersports Centre on Queens Dock. It is situated two docks over from the famous Albert Dock, where you can hire paddleboards and kayaks, or go open-water swimming in the historic Liverpool docks.

For more of a beach vibe, head to the north of the city, to the beaches of Waterloo, Crosby and Formby. This stretch is connected by riverfront walking and cycle paths, and you can hire a bike from Hype Urban Bikes or rent a Bolt Scooter from spots around the city.

When you reach Crosby Marine Lake and Coastal Park, you'll be able to see the iconic Another Place statues by Antony Gormley popping up throughout the shoreline, out to sea. Don't try to head out too far, though; this stretch is known for quicksand!

At the Marine Lake, you can paddleboard, windsurf and sail, or you can wander the coastline with a local Crosby Coffee and admire the views out to the Irish Sea.

On Crosby Beach, you'll also often find yoga sessions. Some are free, and some cost around £8. If you fancy traversing the Mersey to the Wirral Peninsula with its equally beautiful beaches, you can also cycle along the front and find pay-what-you-feel beach yoga in the summer months.

Take a sauna tour

In recent years, saunas have popped up all across Liverpool and the Wirral. From small Scandi-style setups to behemoths seating up to 30 people per session, you can easily have a full weekend in Liverpool, just touring saunas and cold plunges.

Many of these saunas are set up near the coastal activity spots. So, at Crosby Marine Lake, you'll find Mersea Sauna. By the Liverpool Watersports Centre, you'll spot the newly opened Sauna Birds. On the Leasowe Beach stretch along the Wirral, you'll see Detox Wirral, tucked away on the sand.

However, if you don't want to leave the city centre, or are in a slightly bigger group, head to Wyld Sauna on the Princes Dock, just north of the Albert Dock.

Wyld was the first floating sauna in Britain, and has recently announced expansion plans to include the UK's first fully wheelchair-accessible sauna, women-only saunas, LGBTQ+ safe sessions, and on-site pastries, Neapolitan pizza, and a natural wine bar.

Essentially, from the sauna sets and cold plunges to the snacks and glasses of wine, you could spend a full day of wellness at Wyld alone.

Explore for less: make the most of your time in the city by purchasing a Liverpool Pass*, which offers discounted entry to some of the city's most popular attractions from The Beatles Story to The Liverpool FC Museum.

Book a wellness-centric hotel

If you want more of a package wellness weekend in Liverpool, check out the city's first five-star hotel, The Municipal Hotel & Spa*. You'll find signature spa and stay packages that also include a nourishing dinner in the fantastic brasserie, Seaforth.

Near the waterfront, the Titanic Hotel, with its historic underground spa, Maya Blue Wellness, is a sound option. Being so close to the water, hydrotherapy treatments are very popular here.

For something within easy reach of the city's cultural sights, book into the Hope Street Hotel, with its award-winning spa. Choose from Himalayan salt saunas, studio classes, the Tepidarium and deep tissue massages, all in the heart of the city.

As you can see, while the perception of Liverpool might be a chaotic one, filled with music, parties and football revelry, that's only one side of the coin. As a city, Liverpool enjoys a relaxed pace, and locals like to look and feel their best; this is what makes it a top-tier choice for your next UK city wellness break.
