Wander the grand boulevards & colonnades

With its wide tree-lined boulevards, elegant colonnades and porticoes (covered arcades) and grand squares, Turin in northern Italy* has been compared to Paris and Vienna and it's easy to see why.

The city centre is wonderfully navigable by foot, and boasts more than 18 km of covered walkway. Spend a morning roaming its covered networks, and be sure to call by Piazza Castello, which is home to two palaces as well as the Theatre Regio Torino.

The River Po, Parco del Valentino and, within it, the striking botanical gardens are also well worth walking to.

Get to know gianduja

Chocolate lovers will want to get acquainted with gianduja, a creamy and delicious ingredient used that's made from blending Piedmontese hazelnuts and chocolate.

Commonly made into chocolates or a spread, the recipe dates back to the early 19th century and is a must-try. Enjoy it with a Lavazza coffee, which also hails from Turin.

Meanwhile, gourmands will also want to seek out the Porta Palazzo Market, which is one of the biggest open-air markets in Europe.

It's brimming with Piedmontese specialities; look out for local cheese, truffle, fresh pasta and more. Must-try local specialities also include agnolotti pasta and vitello tonnato (veal with a creamy tuna sauce), all washed down with a glass of Piedmontese wine, of course.

Order a bicerin

This hot, layered Piedmontese drink combines espresso, hot chocolate and whole milk and dates back to the 18th century, and Caffè al Bicerin, located on the Piazza della Consolata, is the place to enjoy it.

Steeped in atmosphere thanks to its original dark oak counters and marble tables, the café has been serving this heady concoction, freshly-whisked to order, since 1763. Friedrich Nietzsche, Giacomo Puccini and Umberto Eco were all thought to be fans.

Enjoy aperitivo hour

Aperitivo hour is well-served in Turin*, with many bars offering up a buffet-style service of small plates and snacks with your tipple, typically between the hours of 6pm and 8pm.

And, with Turin being the home of vermouth, you'll naturally want to get acquainted with what's on offer. Caffè Torino, on the corner of Piazza San Carlo, has been serving Negronis since 1903, while Caffè Mulassano, which dates back to 1879, serves its own-blend and is said to be the birthplace of the tremezzino sandwich.

Go to the Museo Egizio

Boasting one of the largest collections of Egyptian artefacts in the world outside of Egypt, there are believed to be 35,000 artefacts here and counting, the Museo Egizio offers a fascinating glimpse into the past.

Housed within a striking Baroque building, the museum is home to everything from ancient papyrus to the Ellesiya Rock Chapel, a temple carved out of Egyptian rock that was transferred stone by stone to Turin.

Discover its cinematic past

With its striking 167-metre tower and aluminium spire, the Mole Antonelliana is hard to miss, which is handy considering it's home to Turin's National Museum of Cinema.

Immerse yourself in the magic of the cinema by climbing the winding staircases of this impressive building and surrounding yourself in cinematic memorabilia. While there, don't forget to take the panoramic lift to the top to observe Turin's grand boulevards and squares in all their glory and beyond that, the Alps.

Take a tour of the Juventus stadium

Football aficionados will love taking a trip to Juventus's Allianz Stadium, located to the north of the city and easily accessible by bus or metro.

Take a tour and explore the locker rooms, media room and the trophy-packed museum, or even try to catch a match while you're there if you can.

Learn all about Fiat

Turin's Lingotto district, to the south of the city, is home to the former Fiat factory.

Inside the building and the Centro Storico Fiat, you can marvel at everything from historic cars to tractors and aircraft, but there's also a 1.5 km race track on the top of the Art Nouveau building's roof, which is now a public garden, that you'll want to explore too.

Visit the Holy Shroud of Turin

The highly debated Shroud of Turin, a 14-foot linen cloth that's thought to bear the imprint of Jesus' body and to have been his burial shroud, is located at Turin's cathedral, the Duomo di Torino, and has been in Turin since 1578. It's not always on display, but visitors can enter the chapel that it's housed in.

Climb to the top of Basilica di Superga

Perched atop a verdant hillside overlooking Turin, the Baroque 18th-century Basilica di Superga is the resting place of the House of Savoy and boasts panoramic views of Turin and beyond.
