Puerto Rico weather overview
This large, mountainous island lies between Hispaniola and the Leeward Islands and its topography and location, in the path of the northeast trade winds, gives it a rainier climate than is usual in the region. Unlike most other Caribbean islands, which have a single summer rainy season, Puerto Rico experiences downpours at any time of the year.
Its centre and north coast (site of the island's capital, San Juan) are particularly rainy. The south coast is more sheltered and therefore drier. Temperatures are high throughout the year in San Juan and humidity can make the heat sticky and unpleasant, although sea breezes help dispel this on the coast and the air is cooler and fresher in the mountains.
