How to find cheap flights

Finding the best value fare for your flight, be it anything from a domestic flight or long weekend to extended travel, can be a real headache. While there is no one rule that will guarantee you the cheapest flights around, there are a few general tips that could help you save when it comes to sniffing out cheap flights:

  • book in advance: typically the cost of flights goes up closer to departure, not down
  • do your research: check comparison and airline websites to see where you can get the best deal
  • use an online deal: browse the latest online flight offers to see if you could save by booking in a sale or with a specific discount code
  • be flexible: if you can fly at less sociable times then you will often find cheaper deals on the likes of mid week, early morning or late night flights
  • read the small print: check to see what is/isn't included with your booking such as luggage and meals

Skyscanner, a leading online flight comparison website, has a handy guide* which shows the optimum time to book flights to popular destinations such as the US (21 weeks before), Spain (seven weeks before), Portugal (five weeks before), and more.

Another way you could save money is by booking your flight plus hotel or car hire in one go. British Airways and Etihad Airways are just two of the brands which have many offers for those able to combine their flight with an extra travel essential.

Airlines, low cost carriers & comparison sites

Where you want to go will, to an extent, determine the cost of your flight in two ways: by popularity and distance. If it's a popular destination with many airlines covering the route then fares are likely to be more competitive, and you may even find great late deals.

However, if it's somewhere slightly off the beaten track, further afield, or perhaps just out of season, you are more likely to find expensive fares with less competition to help keep things affordable.
