Romania weather overview

Romania's climate is similar to that of the Russian plains with severe winters and warm summers. Rainfall is fairly low and concentrated in the winter months, when it is often accompanied by storms. Snow falls in the lowlands for about one month in the winter but the Carpathian Mountains can be snow-covered for up to four months.

The best place to spend the winter is on the Black Sea coast where milder conditions prevail such as at Constanta. Inland, temperatures plunge low enough to freeze the rivers. In the summer, sea level inland areas are the hottest; coastal temperatures are moderated by sea breezes while, up in the mountains, the summers are cool and rainy.

The weather can be quirky at any time of the year. Winds, roaring in from the Russian Steppes, can bring scorching droughts in the summer and icy blasts in winter.

What to pack for Romania weather

Keep summer clothes mainly light if you are visiting the coast or the lowlands but take warmer wear for the winter and the mountains. Be prepared for rain.
