Ecuador launches indigenous community tourism initiatives

The South American nation of Ecuador is one of the most diverse places on earth.

As well as its endemic plant and wildlife species, Ecuador has one of the most varied cultures with 14 indigenous groups across the four regions of the Amazon, Galapagos, Andes and the coast.

Increasingly, travellers (and tour operators) are after more thoughtful, sustainable and community-led experiences. With this in mind, Ecuador's Ministry of Tourism has created the brand new "El Turismo Violeta" programme, which focuses on highlighting the country's indigenous cultures.

El Turismo Violeta is a collection of experiences specially curated to immerse and educate travellers in a way that also gives back to local communities.

These include a trip to the Andean community of La Moya where travellers can visit a volcano, observe the local agricultural practices, witness an Andean healing ceremony and get to understand the local history through the museum and by trying crafts such as weaving.

Then there's the women-led tourism project Sinchi Warmi ('Strong Woman' in Kichwa) located in the Misahuallí parish of Tena Canton.

Here, visitors can experience a cleansing and purification ritual, a rainforest hike, canoeing on the lagoon and see how to fish in the traditional manner. In addition, visitors can make chocolate with Ecuadorian cacao and 'maito', an Amazonian fish dish wrapped in leaves.
