Greenland weather overview
Greenland is the world's largest island and, since three quarters of it lies within the Arctic Circle; winters are long and very ferocious while summers get shorter the further north you go. Northern Greenland, and most of the country's interior, consists of a 3,000m (10,000 ft) deep ice cap and has a truly Arctic climate with temperatures rarely rising above freezing point, even in the short summer.
The country's coasts have long, snowy winters and cool, short but drier summers and there can be pleasant summer days when the sun is strong and the wind is weak. The coasts and the southern mountains behind are the only parts of Greenland free of permanent snow and ice. Glaciers in these mountains produce most of the icebergs in the North Atlantic.
What to pack for Greenland weather
Don't even think of going to Greenland unless you've stocked up with thermals, windproofs, waterproofs and layers of warm to heavy clothing. Some lighter clothes, sunglasses and sunscreen should be packed for a summer visit.
