About Eurostar

Launched in 1994 and carrying thousands of passengers per day, Eurostar's high-speed trains run from London's St Pancras International station direct to the likes of Paris, Lille, Amsterdam and Marseille via the Channel Tunnel.

Connecting tickets onto the centre of hundreds of other European towns and cities can also be booked, usually with options in Business Premier, Standard Premier and Standard classes, or equivalent classes.

Ever innovative, Eurostar was also one of the first rail companies to introduce business-class lounges and a loyalty programme, offering more everyday advantages to travelling by train, not plane.

Why travel with Eurostar?

Compared to flying, Eurostar trips between cities are faster door-to-door, better for the environment - it claims to produce up to 80% less carbon dioxide emissions than planes - roomier on average and liable to deposit you in a much more central location.

There's also the bonus of doing without the faff of baggage reclaims and worrying about liquids during the check-in process, which shouldn't last longer than 30 minutes, and the generous allowance of two pieces of luggage plus a small piece of hand luggage.

Some routes, such as the London to Paris service, offer up to 18 services a day, too, so availability isn't an issue unless you really leave it to the last minute.

What is guaranteed is the glamour of train travel - epitomised by St Pancras International, its champagne bar and massive Meeting Place bronze sculpture - alongside the thrill of whizzing through the countryside at as much as 186 mph.

Eurostar seating options

Standard class customers are guaranteed lots of legroom and far comfier seats than on a aircraft.

Window, aisle and table seats are available, both back and forward-facing - request these upon booking for no extra charge - and there are designated coaches if baby-changing, family-sized tables, quietude, additional luggage space or power sockets at your seat are important.

Buffet car Café Métropole, sells meals, snacks and drinks, and customers can purchase 2-for-1 entries to top galleries and museums in Paris, Brussels or Lille.

Standard Premier, meanwhile, promises extra space, complimentary magazines to peruse and a complimentary snack or light meal served to your seat and plug socket.

In Business Premier, not only does Raymond Blanc oversee those meals but customers are offered free cancellations or exchanges, speedy boarding and lounge access. It's the good life, in other words.

Brussels, Belgium

  • Station: Brussels-Midi/Zuid (South)
  • Journey time from London St Pancras: 1 hour 53 minutes

The Belgian capital may lure visitors with the promise of moules-frites and fine chocolate but there's far more to this city than its indulgent food. As the home of Tintin, of course, there's the Belgian Comic Strip Center while the UNESCO-stamped Grand-Place is where to find a coffee stop for some people watching.

What is Eurostar's compensation policy in case of delays?

Compensation, in the form of Eurostar e-vouchers, is offered on trains that are delayed for 60 minutes or more, dependent on how long you were delayed.

Is there anything I can't take on board a Eurostar train?
