Antigua's climate - an overview

The dual-island nation of Antigua and Barbuda lies at the northern end of the eastern Caribbean island chain. Tourism is by far the mainstay of the economy, employing more than half of the islanders, who are mainly of African decent.

Antigua is the main island, supporting 98% of the population. It is here that tourists are drawn to the idyllic beaches, finding a mixture of small resorts and unspoilt shoreline.

The interior is largely unspectacular scrubland with salt marshes, although occasional banana, coconut, and mango plantations in the south form greener pockets.

Much of Antigua is surrounding by coral reefs, which attract a diverse and colourful array of marine life. The warm coastal waters are calm, clear, and blue making conditions ideal for snorkelling and scuba diving.

The island of Barbuda is rarely visited by tourists. Nevertheless, it has beautiful and deserted beaches and the few local residents are hopelessly outnumbered by a large colony of distinctive frigate birds.

The tropical climate has a short winter dry season running from February to April. This is also the sunniest time of the year, broken only by a few afternoon clouds and very occasional showers.

The peak rainy season lasts from September to November, with the latter month being usually by far the wettest, when heavy and persistent downpours are likely.

Temperatures remain warm all year round, and hurricanes are possible anytime from June to November.
