AA breakdown cover* provides essential emergency vehicle assistance when you need it most. No matter which level of cover you choose, you'll get 24/7 roadside assistance for car, van and motorbike breakdowns more than a quarter of a mile from your home.

If the issue can't be fixed roadside, the AA's vehicle recovery service will tow your vehicle to a nearby garage. You'll also get access to unlimited call-outs (providing it's not for a recurring issue) with the option to add extra cover right up to your doorstep if you want it.

AA UK breakdown cover

The AA is the UK's largest breakdown cover provider with more expert dedicated mobile mechanics than any other UK breakdown service. Working throughout the UK, the AA provides four types of breakdown cover policies including:

  • Personal cover* - personal cover as either a driver or passenger in any vehicle
  • Multicar breakdown cover* - like personal cover but for a minimum of two cars per household
  • Family personal cover - breakdown cover for up to four people living together as drivers or passengers in any vehicle
  • Vehicle cover - cover for one vehicle (no matter who's behind the wheel)

When you take out UK breakdown cover, you'll get roadside assistance as standard with the option to customise your cover and add more benefits. Plus, there's also the option to buy breakdown cover for motorbikes*, electric cars* and caravans and motorhomes*, too.

Examples of extras you can add to your policy include At home* (which extends roadside assistance coverage to your door), onward travel* (which offers alternative transport or an overnight hotel stay if you break down), commercial use*, key cover* and parts and garage* for costs up to £535.

The AA also offers national recovery* if you break down and the roadside team can't fix your vehicle, they will ensure that you, your vehicle and up to seven passengers will be taken to any single UK destination.

AA European breakdown cover

If you're driving abroad and find your vehicle breaks down, the AA's European breakdown cover* offers roadside assistance in over 40 other countries including France, Germany, Greece, Italy, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Sweden and Switzerland.

Each of these countries is categorised under one of three zones with the option to choose and pay for the geographical zone coverage you require.

AA's European breakdown cover gives you access to over 60,000 repairers and recovery operators, covering vehicles of any age including cars, vans, motorcycles, caravans and campervans and providing a 24/7 English-speaking helpline. Towing is also included.

If your vehicle needs to be recovered back to the UK, you'll be covered for up to £50,000 in legal costs. £1,500 for alternative travel and £500 for emergency hotel costs are also included. Plus, there's an option to add Parts and Labour Cover for up to £500 to help you with garage and repair bills.

When you take out European breakdown cover, be sure to choose the zone that includes all the countries you plan to visit and travel through so that you'll be covered throughout your journey. It's estimated that on average, customers save around £650 in repair and recovery costs when they take out European breakdown cover.

AA breakdown cover is available across the UK but if you take out AA European breakdown cover, you'll also be covered for breakdowns in more than 40 different countries, which the AA divides into three separate zones, as follows:

  • Zone 1 - Andorra, Belgium, France, Germany, Luxembourg, Monaco, Netherlands, Republic of Ireland
  • Zone 2 - Andorra, Austria, Belgium, France, Germany, Gibraltar, Italy, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Monaco, Netherlands, Portugal, Republic of Ireland, San Marino, Spain (excluding Ceuta & Melilla), Switzerland, Vatican City

Why do I need breakdown cover?

It's not a legal requirement to have breakdown cover but it is recommended if you drive regularly. This way, if your car breaks down on the roadside, you won't be left in a vulnerable position and you'll receive the support and protection you need. It also means that you won't have to fork out for expensive repairs or a tow vehicle in the event of a breakdown.

What happens if I break down while travelling with my pet?

AA will do its best to repair your vehicle roadside. If, however, it's unable to fix your vehicle and needs to tow you and your passengers to another location, it will do its best to accommodate pets where possible.

For this reason, it's recommended that you use suitable travel carriers or restraints so that your pet can be safely transferred to another vehicle if required.

When will my breakdown cover start?

Your cover is actuated 24 hours after purchase. If you wish, you can also choose to buy cover that starts up to two months later.

If you've already broken down and need instant breakdown cover* roadside, please note that it's not possible to buy cover online. You'll need to call AA on 03330 046 046 instead.

Does breakdown cover include routine maintenance?

Unfortunately not. Breakdown cover provides emergency vehicle assistance after it experiences a sudden or unexpected electrical or mechanical fault that deems it unsafe to drive or continue your journey.

Non-emergency, cosmetic and self-induced faults, as well as issues suspected to have been caused by third-party interference, are not covered.
